I have contacted Microsoft support to try to obtain a Windows 10 recover image for my Surface 3 that came pre-loaded with Windows 8 in order to avoid having to recover back to the older OS and re-upgrade every time. I use the device as a test device and often I have unresponsive or broken OS that I need to restore. Right now I have been doing clean installs of Windows 10 and reinstalling the latest MSI for my device with drivers but ideally I would just be able to restore to factory settings and get all apps, settings and drivers bundled in the first place.

I understand that Microsoft wants people to be able to revert to the OS that came originally installed on the device but that should be an option rather than a mandate. I for once don’t plan on selling my device or using Windows 8. For Surface 3, it is possible to perform a clean install of Windows 10 through the use of a downloaded recovery image.

This will put your device into the same state as it would be in when purchased new with Windows 10 installed. Until t he free Windows 10 upgrade offer ends on July 29th, y ou can use the Windows 10 recovery image on a Surface 3 that has never had Windows 10 installed and it will activate using the product key that came with the device.

After July 29th, the Windows 10 recovery image will only activate on devices that came with Windows 10 or had previously installed and activated Windows Go to the Download a recovery image for your Surface page and select your product. You should see the original Windows 8 image that shipped with your Surface, as well the new Windows 10 Version image.
