Ask a new question. Why no “Briefcase” in Windows 10? A very useful tool when you need the latest synced versions of your documents to use on a laptop or tablet and are in the unfortunate position of no internet connection. OneDrive is great as long as you have internet. There are also some very personal info files that I would rather have “in hand” and not on the cloud.
Was this reply helpful? Yes No. Sorry this didn’t help. Thanks for your feedback. The files I want to sync to a usb drive are not files I want on the cloud. I also do not want to go looking in all my folders each day to copy the file back to the usb drive.
The current program is 64 bit version 2. I lets you choose many different folders to synchronize between devices and computers, but it does not compress or save the files in any backup format, they are copied as is. I have used Windows Briefcases as a simple means of data portability between computers and as a secondary way to backup personal files, such as financial and medical files, to encrypted external USB and Firewire devices.
For me, old Briefcases have worked on XP, Vista, 8, 8. The Windows 10 update to no longer provides Briefcase functionality of any sort. Previously, Windows 10 synched “updated” old Briefcases but would not create new ones. Now, with , it won’t “update” sync existing Briefcases.
I am aware of alternative methods and tools to Briefcase, and in other circumstances I’ve used some of them. None were as completely simple as Briefcase used in conjunction with encrypted external devices. I am baffled why Microsoft would remove this low-overhead, built-in functionality, forcing people like me with long Microsoft operating system and Office experience into engineering a new set of methods for portable, synchronised datasets on removable, encrypted devices.
Thanks for the Community post on registry hacks for Briefcase. I don’t anticipate this will restore all the missing Briefcase functionality on the so-called Creators Update , and I view registry hacks as something to avoid if at all possible. The best solution would be for Microsoft to restore the Briefcase functionality via a supported update immediately to support legacy Briefcase users, as well as anyone else who would benefit from this dead simple tool.
In the meantime, does anyone have guidance on how to get existing, legacy Briefcases to sync on Windows 10 ? I found an older Microsoft app called SyncToy Version 2. It is easy to set up and use. There are several configuration choices to meet your needs. I use with W pro v and so far it works fine. Details required : characters remaining Cancel Submit. Any chance of reconsidering Briefcase for W10? This thread is locked. You can follow the question or vote as helpful, but you cannot reply to this thread. I have the same question Report abuse. Details required :. Cancel Submit. Previous Next. Andre Da Costa Article Author.
Sorry, but Windows 10 is the end of the road. How satisfied are you with this reply? Thanks for your feedback, it helps us improve the site. In reply to Andre Da Costa’s post on July 19, Windows 8 still contained Briefcase in the registry and it could be activated via a fairly simple registry “tweak” I did it and I am not a “techy”.
This is no longer the case for Windows 10 – no way to activate the Briefcase function? How do I sync my files then? In reply to BobBamman’s post on August 5, I also ask the question “how do I sync my files then” NOT on the cloud?
Please bring it back!!! In an early update to Windows 10!! In reply to No-Where-Man’s post on August 30, In reply to TzWeiz’s post on January 28, So its in there, just not ‘activated’.
That was mean of them. In reply to JB8. I use a USB flash drive. In reply to ChiefMike’s post on April 25, Yeah, thanks, ChiefMike, I might give that a try in coming weeks. I’ve seen SyncToy as a not-built-in alternative for some time now, but have yet to install it myself. The thing about Briefcase, though — at least before Microsoft decided to remove it without fanfare — was its total integration built-in and utter simplicity.
I use an excellent 3rd party tool, AISBackup, for my main backups multiple times daily. And I create complete disc images, using the Windows tool for imaging, every so often roughly, every months so I won’t have to rebuild the OS and my programs if things go completely bad. I used Briefcase updates once or twice weekly, so I have my most valuable files if, say, my external device used by AISBackup fails. I also put a copy of my Briefcase files in my bank’s safe deposit box every months.
Microsoft’s removal of Briefcase in W10 knocks a hole in my long standing, multi-method backup disciple. This site in other languages x.
